It's Pumpkin Season!

It's Fall and for anyone who loves pumpkin, it's their favorite season! Pumpkin has become the symbol for Fall and dogs and cats enjoy pumpkin just as much as we do! While we are getting our pumpkin spice lattes, baking pumpkin pies, and visiting the pumpkin patch, your pet can enjoy pumpkin with you.

Aside from tasting great, here are some benefits for your furry friend:

  • High in fiber, which helps aid in digestion
  • Pumpkin seeds are a great source of protein. (Roast the seeds and then grind them up)
  • Great for "bulking up" your pup's food and will help them feel fuller with less calories
  • The pumpkin flesh contains Vitamin A and Vitamin C, which is important for vision health and immunity
  • Contains the antioxidant beta-carotene, which can help slow the aging process
  • Contains zinc, which helps improve the skin and coat

The best way to incorporate pumpkin into your pet's diet is to purchase plain canned pumpkin and just add it to their regular food. Make sure to not purchase the "ready for a pie" version, which has added fats and sugars. Talk to your vet about how much pumpkin to safely give your pet since it varies depending on your pet's size and current dietary needs.
